Why is located in the Sonoran Desert. The landscape is breathtaking. Hiking or just meandering in this desert is an experience unlike any other. This is where the beautiful & grand Saguaro cactus are abundant. Their intricate shapes preside over the countless species of cacti: Prickly Pear, Cholla, (of which there are several varieties), Barrel Cactus, Ocotillo, along with Creosote bushes, also known as Greasewood. Mixed in with these are the unique Organ Pipe Cactus, Mesquite & Palo Verde trees. You may be lucky enough to spot Burros and wild horses. Sparkling rocks containing crystals are plentiful.

A visit to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, whether it be for some of the programs provided or a ride through the scenic drive, is very informative.

The Why Senior Citizens provide several events though out the season. There is something for everyone. Exercise, Breakfasts, Crafts, Cards, Dances, Music, & Movies are all scheduled events. The second Saturday of every month, a Flea Market is held.

Another good pass time is visiting with the people in the RV parks. These people come from far & wide to spend the winters here. Beautiful sunsets & friendly campfires are a perfect ending to the day.

The old mining town of Ajo, just ten miles away, boasts the Ajo Museum. This museum chronicles the history of the old Phelps Dodge Mine. Nearby, the mine itself can be seen.

The town was built by Phelps Dodge Mining Company. See the beautiful town square with it’s Post Office, Drug store, Library and other businesses. Lunch at the sidewalk café and enjoy the carillon from the bell tower at the historic Hurley School at noon.

Visit the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge for information concerning the preservation of the wildlife in the desert.

North of Ajo is the vast expanse of the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range.

A good day trip for shopping can be made to Phoenix, Tucson or Casa Grande.
